An Overview of the Offensive Tackle Position

Ryan Vucina is an experienced Chief Operations Manager in the construction equipment delivery industry and has worked with luxury, mixed use, residential, and interior developers for more than a decade. Outside of the construction industry, Ryan Vucina contributes to various Pacific Grove School District academic and athletic programs. He spent time as an All League offensive tackle at Pacific Grove High School and was recruited by multiple colleges.

The position of offensive tackle is one of the least celebrated by mainstream sports fans, yet it is by far one of the most important roles on the field. Offensive tackles line up on the far ends of the offensive line, with a left offensive tackle taking on the responsibility of protecting a right handed quarterback’s blind side. When it comes to high level, competitive football, teams generally experience only as much success as their quarterbacks can provide, making a strong, intelligent tackle of paramount importance to every squad.

Offensive tackles are tasked with defending the opposing team’s most effective pass rushers. The left tack, or a right tackle protecting a left handed quarterback, is particularly valuable in regards to a quarterback’s success and health, as a right handed quarterback must face right to pass, turning his back to the left of the field. Tackles cannot simply rely on brute strength, however, as additional responsibilities involve communicating detailed pass rush information to the quarterback, which demands a high football IQ, and covering smaller, quicker defenders, which requires quick, agile feet.

Before becoming the Chief Operations Manager of Vucina Construction, Ryan Vucina participated in competitive judo, ranking fourth nationally. Judo practitioners such as Ryan Vucina must master a variety of forms and techniques to excel in this art.

Judo training consists of three different types of practice. Formal exercises, called kata, focus on building the practitioner’s understanding of basic techniques and form, to be used in the other two forms of practice. Freestyle fighting, or randori, focuses on applying those skills and can be practiced with opponents of any skill level. Randori with a more skilled opponent often involves getting thrown frequently and defending against an onslaught of attacks, while randori with a comparably skilled opponent is closer to a match in terms of overall flow. Finally, in a judo match, judo practitioners apply the skills learned during the other forms of practice.

Judo practitioners must practice against both stronger and weaker opponents to build a solid foundation before a match. Only a judo practitioner who is experienced with both throwing and being thrown will be able to maintain composure and move effectively in a proper match.

With over a decade of experience at Vucina Construction in Carmel, California, Ryan Vucina has worked on a wide variety of residential and commercial projects. As the Chief Operations Manager, Ryan Vucina’s responsibilities include supervising every aspect of the construction process, overseeing the bidding process, and managing complex teams of contractors. Vucina Construction was recognized by the City of Monterey for its role in constructing the city’s first Alzheimer’s care facility.

The design of facilities with specialized memory care units requires several special considerations. Patients with Alzheimer’s often struggle with being disorientated and making sense out of their surroundings. The design and layout of memory care units can make a significant impact on a patient’s comfort and general well-being. A successful building design can aid in orientation, assure safety and security, and reduce unnecessary stimulation.

Helping to improve a patient’s awareness and orientation can be accomplished in several ways. First, the placement and design of signage can assist patients in finding their way more easily. Placing all signage at eye level can make it easier to find, while keeping the wording very simple can minimize complications. The ability to personalize the entry to a patient’s room can also help orient a patient to his or her surroundings. Finally, creating a floorplan with rooms that have specific uses can decrease confusion.

Safety and security are important to consider. Memory care units should be well-monitored and secured. If possible, entries and exits to inaccessible areas should be situated parallel to main hallways in order to decrease their visibility. Appropriate handrails and grab bars should be included in the hallways, and obstacles within the hallways should be minimized. When selecting finishes, it is important to avoid loud patterns and choose materials that will prevent slipping.

Providing the right amount of stimulation can also help patients in Alzheimer’s units. Installing materials that absorb sound can be helpful in reducing noise in public areas. Experts also recommend minimizing glare from windows and finishes. Designers can also intentionally provide non-ambulatory patients with interesting views out of their windows.

Ryan Vucina serves as Chief Operations Manager of Vucina Construction, Inc. In that capacity, Ryan Vucina has managed the construction of two hacienda-style luxury homes among other projects.

Haciendas were estates built for minor Spanish nobility in the Americas during the colonial period. Since then, the term has come to be used to describe a traditional architectural style. Generally speaking, a hacienda-style home is U-shaped with the closed end hosting the living quarters and overlooking a beautiful view. The inside of the “U” typically has a courtyard garden. The covered hallway bordering the courtyard gives access to the surrounding bedrooms, and the garden may have a small pond or fountain.

Traditional architectural elements of hacienda-style homes include arched walkways and high ceilings. Haciendas are also known for the use of natural materials in their construction. The houses may have decorated concrete floor tiles, wrought-iron elements, and richly colored interiors. Old-world touches, such as clay-tile porch roofs and stone pavers, may also be included depending on the available natural resources and the geographical location.

An important way of supporting international exchange programs is becoming a host. There are numerous benefits to hosting an international exchange student, including the ones listed below:

1. Inviting an exchange student into one’s home expands one’s cultural horizons. The experience presents the host with the opportunity to learn a new language, try new foods, and listen to new music among other activities.

2. Exchange students offer a new perspective of the host’s culture. Hosts can learn about the international impact of their nation’s policies and how other cultures around the world view and understand their culture.

3. Not only does hosting a student impact the people living under the same roof as the student, but it also expands diversity and awareness in the local school and community. Additionally, children who have exchange “siblings” may themselves become more interested in having international experiences.
